The Extraordinary Utah Jazz
In 1979, after just five seasons in the NBA, the New Orleans Jazz became the Utah Jazz. Their early years were difficult for the team but in 1984 they made it to the playoffs for the first time and have only missed the playoffs three times since. They have eight division titles and two conference titles to their credit and were the only team in the NBA to send players to the 2008 Olympics.
Of course a team like the Utah Jazz could not exist for long without making a few rivals, most notably the Houston Rockets. Several meetings between the two teams in the playoffs throughout the 1980s and 1990s prompted the rivalry which was resurrected when they met again in the 2007 and 2008 playoffs, with the Jazz winning both times.
Entertainment on the court during breaks in the game is as intense as the game itself. The Nu Skin Jazz Dancers are the official dance team of the Utah Jazz, performing at all home games. They also host junior dance clinics during the summer and in recent years have begun hosting their own Xtreme Danzz Competition which has quickly grown to one of the largest such events in the state.
Aside from the dancers, there is also the Jazz Hoop Troop stunt team, the RC Willey Drum Line, the Skate Team, and Jazz Bear the mascot. The Cypress Crew Interactive Team is also present tossing memorabilia to fans and leading fans in cheering on their team.
The Utah Jazz has called many arenas home but currently the Energy Solutions Arena is where they play their games. Opened in 1991, there is seating for 19,911 fans with plenty of luxury suites and hundreds of club seats. The Arena was built at a cost of 93 million dollars and is considered one of the most difficult and intimidating arenas to play in according to a poll taken by Sports Illustrated in 2008.
On August 11, 1999 a tornado tore through the area destroying the roof and many windows. Repairs cost five million dollars to complete but the arena was open for use within 48 hours of the disaster.
Fans on all levels are made to feel important at the stadium, not only down by the court but also up in the top tiers. Fans with tickets in the upper bowl are treated to their own tattoo parlor and a photo booth as well as the Cypress Team, making sure they receive as much gear and prizes as the fans in the lower bowl.
Out in the community, the players and staff of the Utah Jazz are just as tireless as they are on the court. Underserved families and children in the area are assisted through foundations and charities, and the Jazz players even make appearances at local hospitals giving out presents and spreading cheer during the holidays. They happily and energetically promote education and physical fitness, teaching children the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and a successful future.
The Utah Jazz is more than just a basketball team. They are central to helping and improving their community and are well loved by their fans. Jazz games are full of energy and fun for fans of every age.
